Here’s a scary idea. Someone got control of the Twitter account of the disaster management adviser to the President of Indonesia, and tweeted a Tsunami warning. This is being reported as an account hacking, but it could easily be the result of a rogue Twitter app. Right now applications can be set up with read only access or read and write access. When a user gives approval for an app with read and write access to work with their account, they are warned that the app can “access and update” the account, but this isn’t presented as a very strong warning. This type of mischief or even downright terrorism could scare users away from Twitter applications. We’ll see how Twitter reacts if a major problem results from this type of activity.
